HOW TO MAKE RED COLOR AT HOME | TIPS FOR HOME INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

USING HIS FAVORITE RED, a creative designer-builder combined the hall bath and an adjacent bedroom of a 1950s ranch-style house into a moderend master suite. It look only one week of living in a former glover factory for designer-build Lynn Smith to realize the loft he renovated was not him. "Too much like living in my old fraternity house," he says.

Considering his options, Lynn drove through a favorite indianapolis neighborhood where he spotted a 1950s ranch-style house that had been listed for sale that day. He quickly made an appointment to see the place. "(Before) I got the front porch, I decided I was going to buy it-without even seeing the interior".

Besides liking the neighborhood, lynn appreciated the ranch-style architecture of the house and the convenience of the single-level layout. In addition, it offered a spacious 2,400 square feet, including three bedroom and two baths. Like many houses built in the 1950s however, it needed updating. One of the biggest drawbacks was the lack of a master suite. His solution was elegant in its simplicity. He opened the hall bath into an adjacent bedroom, creating the private master retreat so desired today.

Though the bath measures a mere 8x10 feet, Lynn made it seem larger by separating the grooming and bathing areas with sheets of sandblasted glass rather than conventional walls.

A sophisticcated design element, the sandblasted glass is also easy to maintain, as are the just-wipe-them-down unfinished slate floor and wall tiles. "I wanted something I did not have to squeegee every time I used it," he says. Together, the glass and slate set an unmistakable contemporary mood while framing the centerpiece of the bath: a cherry wood, wall-hung lavatory with a stainless-steel sink Lynn first saw in london. The panels also offset his favorite color-red, which dominates the bath and accents the bedroom.

As another spacemaking tactic, Lynn jettisoned the idea of a tub in favor of a custom shower. "To tell the truth, I don't have time to take baths," he says, Tubs I've had in the past just sat there and collected dust."

Relocating the bathroom entry to open to the bedroom required the sacrifice of valuable storage space contained in two large bedroom closets on the common wall. Lynn compensated for the loss with an early-19th-century English line press used as an armoire for shirts and folded clothing. He reconfigured the remaining space into two smaller closets, each 4 feet wide and concealed behind narrow, custom double doors. Otherwise, changes in the bedroom were minimal. Instead, Lynn concentrated on the furnishings he designed a queen-size bed and a pair of maple bedside cabinets. Surrounded by collected artwork and the comforts of his own design, Lynn often uses the suite as an after-dinner retreat for reading and relaxing.

The success of the remodeling may be measured by the reaction of people who might be the most exacting critics: the former owners. Invited to dinner one night, they had the opportunity to see the new master suite for themselves. As Lynn recalls, the response was " Why didn't we think of that?"
