COLORFUL MODERN BATHROOM | Colorful Modern Bathroom Designers used Unexpected Materials

When architectural designer matt harris took on the updating of a small guest bath at an indianapolis showhouse, he inherited two keepers: a 1930s pedestal sink and a mosaic tile floor. Unable to make any permanent changes, Harris' goal was to modernize the space. He began with a pair of clean-lined medicine cabinets that he placed on either side of the lavatory on chrome legs to make them appear of float. "The room needed storage, but I wanted to avoid the expected vanity approach". he says. In lieu of mirrors or wood panels, the cabinet doors feature block-pattern glass that slightly obscures the shelves' contents.

To disguise the badly water-demaged plaster walls, Hariis painted the top part of the wall black and then applied horizontal strips of brich-veneer plywood. The black paint shows trough the seams and gives the strips the illusion of depth. Chrome stripping divides the paneling from lower walls, wich Harris freshened with sage green paint to pick up on the green mosaic inserts. A low-voltage cable system suspends halogen spotlights, while slim wires support tea-light candles on either side mirror.

Designer Patrick Sutton's order was a tall one: to make a home's only bathroom and make the 7 1/2-foot-square space workable for two people to use -at the same time. To complicate metters further, the space constraints and the modest budget that owners had to spend wouldn't accommodate a separate shower and tub. Beacause shawn takes baths and only showers, sutton had to make the most of bth tub and shower in the dual unit. For shawn, who is tall, he installed a 6-foot tub. To help Alex, who has a bad back, sutton put in a second set of faucet handles at shoulder and soap.

Sutton defined the double nature of the tub-shower with solid sections of two differnt colored tiles. The tub area is a serene green hue, while from midway up the wall to the ceilling, the tile is taxi-cab yellow. He brought extra architextural pizzazz to the space with an arched soffit over the tub. When a frameless glass shower enclosure prover too costly, Sutton devised a water and mildew-impervious shower curtain from four layers of fiberglass mesh trimmed with strips from a mustard color paintr's tarp he found at a hardware store. "the four layers of fiberglass mesh turn the water droplets into mist," he explains.

To further help Alex's bad back, sutton put the lavatory on a tile platform to minimize bending. He gave the toilet a modicum of privacy with a beaded board knee wall thet separates it from the lavatory.
