Old and Modern Kitchen Light in Bermuda

The old Bermoda home needed a new kitchen. The homeowners called upon Jamie Carswell, of Total Home Ltd. as designer. The space was completely gutted, and work began. The biggest challenge was all the obstructions in the Old and Modern Kitchen Light in Bermuda, wich had originally been two rooms with differnt ceiling heights, divided by 2-foot walls. Four doors, a large window and an electrical panel added to the confusion and left a very restricted space with which to work. The family, while not large, likes to entertain and needed more space.

To gain the feeling of an open room, the ceiling was removed, exposing the original beams of Light in Bermuda cedar. Counteracting the darkness in that section, it was decited to install a skylight in conjunction with the monorail lighting. The deviding walls were removed and one doorway blocked, resulting in a nice open space. The large window remained to allow as much natural light as possible.

The client wanted to keep the laundry area in the kitchen light but needed more working counter space, so front-loading units were chosen, along with a Corian countertop with full backsplash routed to resemble tile. Refrigerator and dishwasher panels smooth out the look and keep it from being too busy.

The islad with its unvarnished butcher-block top adds space. Blue with black glaze highlights the crown molding and contrasts nicely with the beams. Because the homeowners wanted a place to store wine and glasses, a wine rack and mullioned glass doors area used between the refrigerator and oven/micro cabinets.
