PEACEFUL AND HARMONIOUS GUEST SUITE THE YI YANG CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS

Like a parey maple leaf drifting down a slow moving stream, serenity flows throughout this Asian infused guest suite that's an eclictic blend of Japanese, chinese, Art Deco, and contemporary elements.

"We wanted to do a room that was absoluty serene and tranquil a guest room with Oriental overtones," home designer Gene Zettle says "More of a contemporary version with some oriental accent. (The colors and fabrics we chose) were an effort to maintain an essential simplicity. The home design is more an interplay of textures and shape than color and pattern."

Hand-scraped and qntiquid oak plank flooring adds texture to  the bedroom left as does the velvety upholstery and nubby gray bedding. Sheer curtains and bamboo roads above are a breezy contrast to the darkly finished Chinese chest and exquisite blue and white porcelains.

In the bedroom, for example, straw-hued raffia wall covering supplies warm, woven interst behind a streamlined Art Deco bed set diagonally. In the bath, handmade rice paper embedded with green bamboo tile and richly stained 19th-century Chinese chest converted into a vanity. Zettle used an above-counter marble basin to compensate for the chest's low height.

A late- 19th - ceantury Danish desk opposite melds cultures and eras with an antique Chinese chair, an old African wooden mortar, and modern art and lighting. A sleek faucet contrasts with antique vanity top left. Bamboo leaves are paper top right. Green kirkstone accents the limestone flooring above.

With details that transport the contemporary suite across the Pacific. A Chinese screen stands in the corner behind the bad and mid-19th-century Chinese porcelain pieces top the tall, late -19th-century Chinese chest angled in another corner. Accessories include cane suitcases, bamboo blinds, and baskets that weave texture through the room. Event the lighting. though contemporary, cats an Eastern glow.

"The lamp on the desk has a pagoda feeling but is very contemporary," Zane says. "The wall sconces are all contemporary but have almost Japanese look to them. The sculptural light fixture, made of paper, is vaguely Oriental. If you Use (Asian) pieces in a selective process in a contemporary setting it's like spicing up food for flavor." In the of this suite's geographic mix of design heritage, the flavor is quite delectable.
